He dialed the radio station’s number with a little uncertainty. It was that time of the day when his favorite program on the popular FM radio channel was aired. He adored the particular radio jockey who hosted that time slot. Her vivacious and chirpy voice brightened his mornings when he drove to work.
“Hey there…how can Super-girl Alisha help you today buddy?” her bubbly voice cracked up the confines of his car.
“Hi, Alisha, I’m a great fan of yours!”
“Awesome! So, what’s your name, where are you from and what do you do?” she shot him the usual questions in her mechanically mastered cheery manner.
“Hey Ashish here, from Goregaon. I work as a marketing executive for an MNC. I wish to dedicate a song to my dearest wife Sarika on our tenth wedding anniversary today.”
“Oh…how romantic! Which track do you have in mind, Ashish?”
“The Reason, by Hoobastank. That’s our song,” he replied with a shy smile.
The broad smile on Alisha’s face suddenly got wiped out, replaced by a deep furrow on her forehead as her face went pale.
Their song, is it? Wife? She wondered with a sudden surge of obscure emotions in her.
“Right on. Ashish, can you help me with your full name please?” she went on inquisitively in her thick accent, her ears now sharp and alert to the familiar voice that came from the other side.
“I’m Ashish Goyal. On this special day, I want to tell my wife, Sarika Goyal, how much she means to me. I wouldn’t swap her for any other woman for all my coming life-times.”
The line suddenly went dead much to Ashish’s disappointment and surprise.
She gazed blankly at the microphone. So…she wasn’t the only one who had lied to him. She had lied to him about her vocation with the hope that Ashish Goyal, her boyfriend of two years, would easily agree for marriage if she told him that she was school teacher instead of her actual vocation as a radio jockey. She had feared that her unconventional profession of a radio jockey would not be easily accepted by him as per his expectations of a homely wife.
It was a day of some bitter and shocking revelations for Super-girl Alisha aka Aparna Singh.
In no time he heard the radio playing his request. Doug Robb from Hoobastank sang away to the irony of the situation:
Not the ideal way to find out the truth about someone who you thought was your "boyfriend", is it? But well, at least she discovered it before it was too late. Loved the way you weaved the story around the song (or rather weaved the song into the story – whichever way your intent was) 🙂
Thank you Sid. Yeah, not really the best way to find out. But the deception was from both sides so I think it was only fair. The story got woven first and then came in the song 🙂
Lovely story, Vinodini 🙂
Sometimes lies make us discover the truth… Good for Alisha aka Aparna. Phew! saved from liar "boyfriend". Wish everyone was as lucky & found out the truth…
Thanks Anita. Well, I guess both were deceptive, maybe in varying ratios.
Wow! Great story! And very cleverly done! Enjoyed reading your blog
Thanks preacher. Glad you enjoyed it.
Way to put yourself out there. Good Job.
Thank you Christy.
Well done. Powerfully honest!
Thank you J.S. Brooks.
An innovative way to present the song, Vinodini. Love the way how you presented the story and weaved it to describe the emotion called love:)

Thanks Vishal. I wonder though if there was any love in it at all.
Lovely story! But sometimes I fail to understand why people do such things. The truth will be out some day. So why not start with the truth?
Thank you Reema. Yeah, these are sad realities of life. Lying always seems to be any easy way out.
Wow! What a twist! So heartfelt and heartbreaking too, just like life can be…realistic, happy at times, painful and sad at times. Is that a real song or did you make that up? It's great!
Thanks Elly. It is a real song. 'Reason' by Hoobastank, a Christian band, is one of my all time favorites. Look it up on YouTube if you wish to.
Hmm..A nice twist! When you give out something, you get back exactly that 🙂
Thanks Keirthana. Its always a tit for tat.
Aah! Such surprises can be heart breaking! Loved the way you wove the song into the story! Very apt and simply perfect! 🙂
Thanks Shilpa. Yeah, some surprises are indeed unpleasant.
I fell in love with your stories already…
Aww thanks Prasanth! Feels good to know that someone enjoys them so much.
Amazing story here Vinodini. Loved it 🙂
Hi, I m new on your blog and I enjoyed reading this wonderful story. I m a Radio Jockey I can relate with this story because many people call us and share their story or feelings. Sometime we put them on AIR and sometime we don’t. ?
Thanks! You’re a radio jockey…that’s great! I’m sure your job must be pretty challenging. How you handle the stories of people who call you can be quite tricky.
